Civil Rights Act

The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was passed in order to make sure that all
Americans could exercise their right to vote. It was the first civil
rights legislation passed since reconstruction. Its enactment also came after African Americans were increasingly targeted with violence following the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision ending segregation in schools. The law showed a renewed national attention to
guaranteeing civil rights to all Americans. In addition, it established the Commission on Civil Rights, a federal oversight committee that examined opinions of the public and state laws regarding civil rights.

Briefly describe the impact of the opening of the Erie Canal on the<br> existence of Detroit.
-Dominant- [34]

The Erie Canal reinvigorated Detroit.

The Erie Canal was a very ambitious project that connected Detroit and the huge commercial powerhouse of New York City.

Detroit benefitted hugely from this because:

  • it became a center of trade as people came to trade things coming and going to New York
  • the population rose significantly as a result of it being a center of trade
  • the city became more modern to accommodate it's newfound status.

We can therefore conclusively state that the Erie canal had such a massive influence on Detroit that it is no exaggeration to say that Detroit would not be the city it is today with the canal.
