The 1920s is considered a period of prosperity and optimism for many Americans, however in 1929, as the stock market crashed began the Great Depression. It was the worst economic downturn in history as millions of people in United States lost their jobs and unemployment rate increased drastically. The people who retained their jobs took significant pay cuts. There were food shortages and farmers were affected greatly. As a result, immigrant workers deported, some went voluntarily while others were even tricked or coerced. Due to high unemployment rates and economic crisis, less people were inclined to come to United States, hence the number of people leaving were more than people entering the US.
