Scientists consider glass an amorphous substance. This means it is not truly a solid or a liquid. It exists in a state somewhere

in between. Though the molecules that make up glass have a messy arrangement, they still manage to bond together and become stiff. Glass reaches this state once it has cooled after introduction to intense heat. In fact, the opposite is also true. Introducing a piece of glass to extreme heat can return it to a liquid form.
Although glass is thought of as "stiff," it actually exists in a state that is between a solid and a liquid. Which could result in changing glass to a liquid state ?

Answer:

D) heating a window pane to an extremely high temperature

Explanation:

The missing options are:

A) having a volcano erupt near a highway

B) breaking glass into finely crushed pieces

C) lightning striking the roof of your house

D) heating a window pane to an extremely high temperature

In the text it is mentioned that: "Introducing a piece of glass to extreme heat can return it to a liquid form". Then, option D is the correct one. The other options will break the piece of glass, conserving its solid state.

Molten glass is malleable and can be shaped through various techniques. From a molecular point of view, glass is an overcooled liquid. The main component of the glass is silica, which is obtained from sand, quartz or flint. The silica melts at very high temperatures to form glass. Due to its high melting point it suffers little dilatation with temperature changes is suitable for laboratory apparatus and telescope mirrors. Glass with high sodium content can be dissolved in water, forming a viscous liquid called water glass used as fireproof varnish and sealant. As it has a high sodium content it is used in the manufacture of spotlights, glasses, bottles and laminated glass. It also results in lead glass that is combined with lead oxide to make lenses, prisms and jewelry. Another type of glass resulting is borosilicate glass that contains borac and is very durable and resistant to high temperatures, is used in kitchen utensils and equipment for chemical processes.
