Shopping in grocery stores used to be very different than it is today. Customers would hand a list of items to a clerk. The cler

k would gather the items and put them in bags. Sometimes a clerk would deliver the groceries. In 1910, Clarence Saunders changed the way grocery stores worked. He opened the first self-service grocery store. Saunders named his store the Piggly Wiggly. At the Piggly Wiggly, customers could walk up and down aisles to gather their own items. Clerks were only needed to bag the groceries and collect payment from customers.

Answer: Saunders <u>designed</u> a new kind of grocery store.

Explanation:

Let us look at all the different options given. We can then use a process of elimination to see which one makes sense.

         [✗] protested

-> "a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something." (<em>Oxford Languages</em>)

-> Clarence Saunders did not protest a new kind of grocery store.

         [✗] praised

-> "express warm approval or admiration of." (<em>Oxford Languages</em>)

-> There was no new grocery store for Saunders to show approval of, so this answer does not work.

         [✗] located

-> "discover the exact place or position of." (<em>Oxford Languages</em>)

-> Saunders did not find where the new kind of grocery store was, he created it.

         [✓] designed

-> "planned or conceived in detail or for a specific purpose." (<em>Oxford Languages</em>)

-> This definition fits what we are looking for.

Read the following excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham," then answer the question.
GaryK [48]

Answer:

B. His tone shifts from logical to ironic,

Explanation:

In the beginning of the paragraph he talks about the only logical reasons there are in why the law is wrong. The second half of the paragraph is ironic becausse he speaks of how he would act in those situations even though he isn't in them. Legal and illegal are not being used correctly throughout history when they should clearly have been fixed. Therefore, it is ironic.
