Homeric Similes, also known as Epic Similes, are elaborate comparisons between two different objects using like or as.

1: "I drove my weight on it from above and bored it home like a shipwright bores his beam with a shipwright’s drill that men below, whipping the strap back and forth, whirl and the drill keeps twisting, never stopping, so we seized our stake with it fiery tip and bored it round and round in the giant’s eye"

2: “It’s crackling roots blazed and hissed, as a blacksmith plunges a glowing ax or adze in an ice-cold bath and the metal screeches steam and its temper hardens, that’s the iron’s strength, so the eye of Cyclops sizzled round that stake.”

Answer:

Situational irony.

Explanation:

Situational irony is a literary device used when the author wants the readers to expect something but ends with the opposite. Here, the author uses Scout's situation to derive the irony in the passage.

Scout who had a bad day at work stumbled across a movie set while returning home in a deep thought. The author used that situation to derive the irony by making Scout jump into the movie scene trying to help the actor who was in distress. Ironically, it was all a scene in the movie and Scout wasn't aware of it.

The author also used humor by mentioning that the shoplifter outran Scout. This is because Scout was a security guard and it was his duty to apprehend the shoplifter but he couldn't do that too.

Ierofanga [76]

Moshe is awkward, clownish, shy, doesn't talk much but sings, deeply spiritual, very poor, and the community likes him.    Are there any options to choose from?   One critical way in which Moshe is important to both Eliezer and the people of Sighet is because of his symbolic meaning.
