In the 1920s, there was a struggle between new cultural movements and social developments and the traditional values and conventions of the past. There was a new youth movement in the 1920s that challenged the old values of the previous generations. The modernists were more focused on the present and they looked to the future in order to anticipate changes were coming their way. There was new energy and excitement with the growth of urban living and fast-paced life in the larger cities. Modernists like the famous flappers, automobile owners, and those who listened to jazz music preferred the fast-paced lifestyle as opposed to the slower-paced anti-modernist lifestyle.
