They did not want to be ran by Great Britain anymore, and wanted to become their own country. They were sick of having "taxation without representation", and Great Britain obviously taking advantage of them. George Washington was a very influential figure in the Revolutionary War. He was the commander of the Continental Army, which included individuals from all 13 of the colonies. When George Washington got back from fighting in the war, he ended up serving two terms as the United States president.
