Andrew Jackson moved the Native Americans living in the southeastern United States to modern day Oklahoma. Jackson did this through the Indian Removal Act. In this law, the Cherokee of Georgia gave their native lands to the American federal government. In return, the Cherokee were given land in Oklahoma that would be exclusively theres. This was the beginning of the reservation system within the United States. This event is often remembered in a negative light, as thousands of Cherokee would die on the journey from Georgia to Oklahoma in what is now referred to as the Trail of Tears.
