Galileo said that the Earth was NOT the center of the solar system, the sun was. This disagreed with the church's belief that the Earth was the center of the universe. Galileo refused to back down and was placed under house arrest for many years before finally being freed.

One factor that enabled the growth of independent colonial government
ser-zykov [4K]

Answer:

Difficulty of exercising control of a government from a distance.

Explanation:

Establishment of independent colonies in North America was made possible due to the physical factors. For British Government, it was difficult to control colonies in North America from distance.

When colonies began to develop in North America, British government allowed Governors of newly established colonies to self-govern the colonies till they match with the laws of England, the mother country.

The colonizers began settling in North America with the aim to enjoy religious freedom and thus the King also permitted colonizers to have political independence as it was impossible to exercise control over the colonies from such a great distance.

The Union Army failed to capture Richmond and won at Antietam only because the Confederates withdrew from the field first. In the western part of the Confederacy, the Army of the West won the Battle of Shiloh, and the Union navy captured New Orleans and Memphis.
