I am so stressed! I barely have a minute to relax all day long. Before school, I go to swim practice, and after school, I work o

n the school newspaper and have piano lessons. On Saturday mornings, I volunteer at the local hospital. Then the rest of the weekend, I try to catch up on the schoolwork that I didn’t have time for all week. I never see my friends, and I always eat on the run. I’m starting to have headaches and stomachaches. What should I do?

saveliy_v [14]

Answer:

Explanation:

It is recess and the sun is shining! Stefanie and Latisha can hardly keep from running as their class walks in a line to the playground. The two girls have been friends since kindergarten. Both athletic and social, together they have been the leaders among their peers. They usually decide recess activities and other girls quickly follow; however, things seem to be changing in the fourth grade. Latisha is spending more time with another girl, Thanh, as they now play on the same soccer team together. They are even joining the boys in their soccer games on the fi eld. Stefanie tries to join in but the boys will not pass her the ball and she is left standing on the sidelines. She really does not like the boys. Stephanie tries to join the other girls from their class but their friendship “clubs” are already formed and she thinks that they are not willing to include new members. Stefanie goes home that night and cries to her mother. She tells her that everyone, including her teacher, is mean.

Let’s Discuss

• Are the feelings that Stefanie is articulating normal or typical? Why or why not?

• How might you explain Stefanie’s feelings about friendships?

• How might you explain Stefanie’s assessment of other people’s actions?

• How might you explain Stefanie’s feelings about gendered friendships?

Former U.S. president John F. Kennedy quoted John Winthrop as a source of inspiration. John F. Kennedy saw John Winthrop’s determination through Winthrop’s directive which provided caution and inspiration to the passengers. Puritan pridefulness has been represented by Winthrop’s “City upon a Hill” passage; the Puritans thought they were perfect, a city on top of a hill where everyone would admire and want to imitate. Winthrop had known that the world would watch the events in New England, not just by England.

Phoenix [80]

Answer:

In the given passage, the word puncheon refers to a smoothed log used during summer time as this is cool.

Explanation:

This extract, taken from Twain's Huckleberry Finn, is trying to create a scene, where the protagonist enters the church and finds a dog (hog) or two inside the church. He is trying to say that dogs like smooth logs to sleep on as they become very cool during the night on any summer day. Therefore, the word puncheon, here, describes a smoothed log.
