Gun safety is a subject that has been a main topic in the past few years among many, especially within politics. It is something that has become a substantial topic in the past few years due to many shootings and accidents that have occurred with today’s youth. It is a topic that needs to be addressed. Gun safety is very important in the matters of teaching people that firearms are not a toy. One should always treat the gun like it is loaded. When at a hunting store to purchase a hunting shotgun this past summer, there was a gentleman standing right next to the handgun case looking at a semi-automatic pistol. The man asked to look at a certain handgun and then proceeded to pick up the handgun and looked down the sight. This was dangerous because it was directed at the sales associate’s upper torso. Then the man decided to turn and look down the aisle, pointing the gun towards a group of people. It was obvious that because of his actions. The gentleman was not ready to be purchase and handle a firearm. He was escorted out of the store and was questioned about the intent behind his actions. This is one of many common problems with a significant number of people that have not been trained in gun safety or who are not mature enough; their actions show that they are not ready to be handling a gun. Out of the 102 teachers that responded, 62% of those teachers said that they were for teaching gun safety in schools. Of those 62%, about 54% say that they feel that police or trained military personnel should teach these safety classes in the schools.
There are also many out of school programs that teach kids from kindergarten through sixth grade about gun safety. The Eddie Eagle program is one of the more common programs. This program is sponsored through the National Rifle Association. The class is taught that when the see a gun, they should stop, don’t touch, leave and get an adult. There are also other programs that teach kids to not be afraid of guns because when kids are afraid and nervous about something, mistakes tend to be made.
The Center to Prevent Handgun Violence even has a special program set up called Straight Talk about Risks. This helps kids from kindergarten to 12th grade about how to control their anger, conflict resolutions, and what damage can be caused with using a firearm to resolve a conflict. These programs are a great forefront when trying to help children learn about gun safety and understand that a gun is not a game.
