Esperanza rising is third person. First person would be if the narrator was telling their own story, but third person tells a story from another perspective. If you were writing a story about someone you know, that would be written in third person because it comes from your perspective; however, if the person was writing something from their own perspective, they would be the narrator, which would make it first person.
