Answer: Well, I'd need to know what the plot was to be sure (plot is a <u><em>really</em></u><em> </em>weird word, I just realized) But from what I can tell, I'd say this statement kind of introduces the plot.

Explanation:

It tells that later in the story, the dad of the narrator is probably going to get hit by a car or maybe a train, but it seems like he's familiar with the headlights, like he wasn't afraid of them because he couldn't read his future, but if he had been able to read his future, he never would have befriended, and later married those headlights, or whatever. But again, I'd kinda need to know the plot.
