A flashback is an event that interrupts the actions of the story to explain or add to present events. In this excerpt, Han is leaving his college dorm. He flashes back on all the good memories he had in the room to show his sentimentality for the place. The flashback develops Han's character and helps the readers to better understand what Han is leaving behind as he ventures off to the next stage of his life.
