Civil war and famine impulsed them to migrate to the US, as soon as they heard they had big opportunities to work looking for gold and send money to their families back home. In steamships, they arrived in San Francisco's harbor, where the first Chinatown was founded.
Islam spread through many places such as traders/trades, pilgrimage, and missionaries. Arab Muslim forces conquered vast territories and built imperial structures over time.
I believe its Americans' sympathies lay overwhelmingly with Great Britain and its allies.
