Wynne has just gotten a new prescription medicine from the doctor to help with anxiety and difficulty sleeping. The label says,

“Xanax. Take 1 tablet each evening with dinner. Will cause drowsiness.” Based on this label, what is the correct drug category for this medication? What is MOST likely its intended use? Why might this type of medication require a prescription? How can the proper use of this medication contribute to Wynne’s overall health? What could happen if Wynne chooses to misuse this (or any other) prescription or over-the-counter medication?

Answer:

Drug Category - benzodiazepines

Intended Use - Xanax is primarily for the treatment of panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia) but, many find its helpful in lowering anxiety

Why - This medication can be addictive and dangerous, so it tells you how much is safe to take for you.

How - If Wynne, consistently takes the right dose, a few days later and she might have good sleep, the Xanax can calm her down an relieve stress and anxiety.

What - If Wynne were to take more than was safe it could lead to the increase of severe sedation, breathing problems, coma, and death, in worse cases.
