In the mid-1950s, President Eisenhower's argument for federal funding of highway construction emphasized national defense.

What do you mean by funding?

Funding refers to the act that provides resources for financing any project, plan, or program.

When the soviet union launched the artificial satellite in 1957, congress responded by passing the national defense education act.

The federal aid stimulated the economy by increasing the authorizations for interstate construction. The Eisenhower administration proposed the financing of the interstate highway system by issuing bonds and expecting governments to contribute at least 70 percent of the total cost.

The basic emphasis of President Eisenhower's argument for federal highway funding was national defense.

Why did President Eisenhower want federal highway funding?

President Eisenhower believed that in the event of war, there would be a need for an efficient road network that would allow the nation to transport weapons and manpower adequately.

For this reason of national defense, he argued that the federal government should fund the construction of highways. This gave birth to the Interstate system.
