Germans were the immigrant group most likely to have settled in the midwest in the decade after the civil war. During this time period, German immigrants extended along a "belt" that went from eastern Pennsylvania to the Oregon coast. German immigrants were attracted to the United States because of the availability of land and the promise of religious freedom. They were also pushed out of Germany due to shortages of land and religious oppression.
