The fact that the people in charge of Manzanar knew little about Japanese culture made the conditions there even worse. For example, they served rice with syrup on top for the prisoners to eat. They also assumed Japanese people eat everything with rice.

  • Manzanar was a concentration camp during the second World War in which Japanese people were imprisoned after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
  • In her memoir "Farewell to Manzanar," Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston talks about  how the camp changed her family's life.
  • Conditions at the camp were awful. The place was unfinished. There was dirt everywhere. The bathrooms were open and there was barely room for everybody.
  • Children were constantly falling sick due to malnutrition. Also, temperatures were often extreme at the place.
  • To make matters worse, the people in charge of Manzanar knew little about Japanese culture. They would, for instance, serve the prisoners rice with syrup on top of it.
  • They also thought Japanese people ate rice with everything.
  • Therefore, the already bad conditions of the camp along with the poor treatment from those in charge of it made the whole situation awful.

How can literacy benefit our lives?
Whitepunk [10]

When you read books, that assists in sharpening your vocabulary. Writing is also a good creative outlet, and can be therapeutic to some people. So, being literate is honestly quite beneficial.
