The lines that indicate that the narrator lacks a real choice are;

• If I can’t have
• What I want . . . then
• My job is to want
• What I’ve got
• And be satisfied
• That at least there
• Is something more
• To want

In the poem, "Choices", by Nikki Giovani, the poet shows that she does not really have a choice in most situations in life. All she could do was to make the best of whatever situation she found herself in.

In the lines above, the poet describes it as her "job" to want what she has got. The use of the term "job" is indicative of a task that someone really has no choice in.

She is simply satisfied with the fact that there is something to want. Her tone and choice of words are indicative of someone who was just settling with what she had at hand.
