Rationalization is the defense mechanism that is deployed to make an event or an impulse less unpleasant or threatening. It is a conscious effort that involves the use of excuses or some kind of logic to excuse or justify such impulses away.

maintain self-respect
Protect oneself against criticisms
A common example of where this is used is when a person blames the traffic for getting to work late rather than their own tardiness.
Sometimes, it can be used as an effective method of dealing with grief especially after the loss of a loved one.
