In 1983, Paul Amato, a professor of sociology and Criminology at Pennsylvania State University staged an incident in which a man fell in pain and raised his pant leg to reveal an injury. He repeated the staged scene in both rural and urban areas and found that of the total number of people who passed the scene, about 50 PERCENT of those in rural areas stopped to help.
