They signed the peace treaty, to end the war and thereby took on all of the requirements of it. Do note at the treaty of versaille Germany was NOT present(unlike the Conference of vienna, where France was at it). Additionally, the people had thought that the Weimar Republic had backstabbed the people in the back by signing onto the repressive treaty. Also, the elections were just a mess due to multiple people being able to run, and the majority getting to lead(so you can win without a majority!) In their time they allowed for extreme right-wing paramilitary groups to quell people down. In their fall, the Nazi's didnt get the majority of the votes but were able to seize control of the government and paint it as if they had won.(Some strategies Hitler used; perpetual campaigning- he would continue to campaign for the Nazi party even after the election season was over, unlike other parties; small venues- this allowed for the people who came to be stuffed in which made the room feel bigger) Hitler eventually just took complete control and created the third Reich.
