Answer:

The focus of the book is what is now known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Over time, the author explains how soldiers' stress and demand for aid have evolved. They use the word "shell shock" as an illustration of how the term came to be used. Compared to the names it was afterwards referred to, the author feels this two-syllable phrase was simpler and more straightforward. "The pain is completely buried under jargon," it is said. I'll bet if they had still been calling it "shell shock," some of those Vietnam veterans might have received the attention they needed. Authors argue that troops were better served by the original word, shell shock, since it didn't have a long phrase and many more syllables. When a soldier is "on the edge of a nervous collapse," he or she is said to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

3. mother said that he had to do his home-<br>work then. (Into direct speech)<br>-
UkoKoshka [18]

Answer:

Mother said "He has to do his homework now."

Explanation:

When describing something that someone said directly is called direct speech while reporting the same event without the speech marks and not using the exact same words is known as reporting speech. To change between the two requires the change in the tense of the verbs and also some phrases or time words, according to their structure. For example, yesterday is changed to the previous day in the indirect speech and so on.

The given indirect speech "mother said that he had to do his home-work" will be changed into the direct speech as given below-

<u><em>Mother said, "He has to do his home-work now."</em></u>

Here, the apparent changes are the speech marks (" "), the comma after "said", and the change in "then" to "now".

Read chapter 1, “The Prison-Door,” from The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and answer the question that follows.
Andreas93 [3]

Answer: E. They are a conservative and pious community.

Explanation:

The opening description of the men whom were in “sad-colored garments”, “steeple-crowned hats” and “bareheaded” or hooded women simply shows that the characters were in a conservative and pious community.

The introduction to the Puritan society coupled with the "sad-colored garments" and steeple-crowned hats” shows that the community was dour, and judgmental and the community had people who were traditional, conservative and deeply religious.

Therefore, the correct option is E.

What about Gatsby's parties indicate that he is wealthy? <br><br> In the great Gatsby chapter 3
DedPeter [7]

Answer:

We are told that Gatsby came up from essentially nothing, and that the first time he met Daisy Buchanan, he was “a penniless young man.” His fortune, we are told, was the result of a bootlegging business – he “bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago” and sold illegal alcohol over the counter.Jay Gatsby's parties symbolize the shallowness of the upper class in The Great Gatsby. Gatsby's parties were the hub for upper-class society. ... It shows the shallowness of the upper-class and the fact that they are obsessed with wealth.

Advice: try reading the book
