Ethyne is useful for artificial ripening and preservation of fruits. It is useful in acetylene lamps to generate light. Ethyne is used to prepare various organic compounds. It is also useful to manufacture important organic compounds like acetic acid, acetaldehyde, ethyl alcohol and polymers like PVC, etc.

Since ethyne burns with a very hot flame, one of its most notable applications is in oxyacetylene gas welding and oxyacetylene gas cutting. When ethyne is subjected to combustion with oxygen, the flame created is known to have a temperature of roughly 3600 Kelvin.
