its not just that oil was abundant but it was also cheap it doesnt matter if companies greenwash or not they have to find more environmentally sound fuels anyways because the amount of oil that can be drilled for cheaply has been decreasing more than greenwashing or not companies have been trying to find a way to make environmentalism profitable with some success electric cars are an example.
