Answer:

Even though it puts his freedom in jeopardy, Jim refuses to forsake Tom, who has been shot. A group of men are pursuing Jim and Tom. Tom gets shot during the escape, and Jim refuses to flee without him, knowing that he is in a lot of pain and terror. As a result, Jim loses his opportunity of escaping capture. Jim's humanity shines through in these three chapters because you witness him struggle for his freedom throughout the novel. After Tom is shot, he places Tom above his freedom in one fell swoop. And he is rewarded for his behavior. Jim gave the specialist in nursing Tom, they promptly unchain him, feed him, and deal with him like a ruler. Tom gives Jim forty bucks for his inconveniences, and Jim announces that the sign of his shaggy chest — which should bring him fortune — has come true.

Jim refuses to abandon Tom, who has been shot, even though it jeopardizes his freedom.

Why does this show Jim's humanity?

 • Because he sacrifices himself for Tom.
 • Because he shows companionship to Tom.

Jim and Tom are on the run from a group of men. In the escape, Tom is shot and Jim refuses to run away without him, as he knows he is suffering and feeling a lot of pain and fear. This causes Jim to lose his chance of not being captured.
