The Hate You Give is about a black girl who encounters racism, for the first time after one of her childhood friends, Khalil, is shot by a cop for grabbing a hairbrush in his car which he “mistaken” for a gun. Starr Carter is the main character of this story, she attends a primary school that’s filled with white people and has always felt left out. After this shooting incident with her friend, Starr realizes the racial encounters people or color experience on a daily basis and speaks about against racial injustice.
