Containment was the plan to stop the spread of communism. The U.S was convinced that if one country fell to communism then the surrounding ones would eventually fall to communism. We did our best to control Communism in the east. According to the U.S Countries were either purely democratic or purely communist. there was no in between.

Most countries dont need "justification" for joining a war, typically the only justification is a decision backing up allies, and under this definition, the US was justified, Japan had also initiated aggression againts the US, giving the US an incentive to join the war, so yes, its likely that they were justified in joining the war, for several reasons
