Franz Ferdinand decided to visit Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and
Herzegovnia, to make an inspection of the Austro-Hungarian troops there.
The inspection was scheduled for 28th June 1914. It was planned that Franz
Ferdinand and his wife Sophie would be met at the station and taken by car
to the City Hall where they would have lunch before going to inspect the
troops.
He sorely needed the relief offered by the American forces. In May 1917, General John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing was designated the supreme commander of the American army in France, and the American Expeditionary Forces were created.
One reason why Japan has such a distinctive culture is because it was closed off from the world from 1623 to 1641. The Tokugawa Shogunate closed Japan because they were afraid of all the new ideas and cultures that came from trading. Because of this period of isolation, Japan created their own unique culture without being influenced by any western ideas.
