But the problem was that there were multiple competitors for those natural resources, and all of them wanted to get their hands on them, so in the race to get them, they often ended up in military conflicts.
Americans started voting for progressives towards the beginning of the 20th century. This was after sustained intellectual criticism of the American system of individualism and laissez faire. Progressives came up with socially concsious laws that granted the government more powers and ability to tax more for social programs.
