They seperated people who had the plague, they tried to kill rats and clean up areas where rats could live. They tried to keep food away from where rats or fleas could get it. Some people believed it was spread by air, and therefore burned incense. Some towns thought sound could cure it and rang church bells or fired cannons. There we people spells and such that supposedly cured people of the plague. The most succesful were towns like Milan who walled up any house that had the plague, along with every person, living or healthy, inside it. Venice made any ships go to an island instead of Venice itself. Pope Clement VI had two fires burn as he sat between them to breathe pure air. The plague actually was killed by heat, so this method did work.

Do you think it is a good idea that supreme court justices are appointed for life? Explain your answer
Harman [31]
Part of the debate over rights in the 18th century involved the prerogative of kings to remove and appoint judges upon their ascension to the throne. Liberal thinkers believed that lifetime appointments would scale back the power of the king, and therefore represented social progress. If a judge was sure of his seat, he could vote according to his own judgment, despite the wishes of the king. The Whigs in Britain actually won this right, though whether it really served their cause or their government is anyone's guess.
