When you add or subtract a value directly from the "x" value, the graph moves to the left or right. If you add a number, the graph moves to the left because you are making the "x" value larger. If you subtract a number, the graph moves to the right because you are making the "x" value smaller. The graph moves up/down if you add/subtract a number to the entire function, not just the "x" value.
