An example of an artisan slave can be found in the book "Stealing South" in which Mr. Ezekiel, the artisan slave 'knows a lot of things' and that there isn't a lot of things that he doesn't know about that goes around that area. He also states that because of his knowledge, he was given greater freedom than most slaves.
