What the heck is biology
inessss [21]

Answer:

Biology is the scientific study of life. It is a natural science with a broad scope but has several unifying themes that tie it together as a single, coherent field. For instance, all organisms are made up of cells that process hereditary information encoded in genes, which can be transmitted to future generations. Another major theme is evolution, which explains the unity and diversity of life.

Alexis weighs 6.5 pounds at birth. Assuming her development proceeds normally, she should weigh about _____ pounds by her first
Nataly [62]

Answer:

C. 19.5

Explanation:

The simplified linear equation derived to calculate mean weight for Children aged 1-5 years: Weight (kg) = 2 x (age in years + 5.5)

Alexis weighs 6.5 pounds at birth

Assuming her development proceeds normally, after one year:

Weight = 2 x (1 + 5.5)

            = 2 x ( 6.5)

            = 13

∴ (13 + 6.5) pounds = 19.5 pounds.

Which of the following describes the role of cyclic AMP (cAMP) in hormone response? A. cAMP receives messages from mRNA to begin
Advocard [28]

Answer:

D

Explanation:

Hormones are bigger than the cell pores hence cannot pass through the cell membrane to influence biochemical processes. Therefore, hormones (such as glucagon and insulin) bind onto receptors on the cell membrane, then transmembrane proteins, such as the G-protein, change conformation activating the secondary messengers inside of the cell. Cyclic- AMP is a major secondary messenger  significant in activating protein kinases.

Describe how oxygen gas (O2) is produced during photosynthesis. Include the specific structures in the plant where the reaction
Dmitriy789 [7]

Answer:

See the answer below

Explanation:

Oxygen gas is produced during photosynthesis by photolysis of water in the chloroplasts of algae and green plants and in the thylakoid of cyanobacteria. The chlorophyll of photosystem II absorbs light energy which leads to the excitation and knocking out of an electron within the photosystem.

The energy released as a result of returning the electrons to the ground state in an acceptor molecule is used in splitting water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The electron released from the splitting of water replaces the one knocked out from the photosystem II while oxygen atoms from two water molecules combine to form diatomic oxygen which is later released as oxygen gas.

The whole process of photolysis of water and the release of oxygen gas happens during the light-dependent reaction of photosynthesis.
