Answer:
The entire story of the Christmas Carol is taken place in the City of London, in 1843, and on the days of Christmas Eve, Christmas day, and the morning after Christmas. The story starts by the ghost of Jacob Marley (Ebenezer Scrooge's past business partner) standing with Ebenezer Scrooge in Scrooge's office. He introduces himself and explains how he knows Scrooge. He also explains that Scrooge as "England's most tightfisted hand at the grindstone" and as a " squeezing, wrenching, grasping scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner." These two quotes show that Ebenezer Scrooge is a selfish, cold hearted, rude man who is so (as Marley stated) tightfisted he wouldn't lend a penny to anyone. Also it shows that even Scrooge's closest friends believe he acts this way and think he is a horrible person. The next scene starts with Bob Cratchit (Scrooge's clerk) and Scrooge working in Scrooge's office. Cratchit is trying to warm himself with a tiny piece of coal that is barely lighting a flame. He only has this little flame because Scrooge always refuses to pay Cratchit more money. Later on Scrooge's nephew, Fred, drops by to wish his uncle a Merry Christmas. He also invites Scrooge to dine with himself and his family on Christmas day. Scrooge not only refuses his nephew's offer but answers him with a mean spirited answer of "Bah! Humbug!." This quote shows what Scrooge thinks of Christmas. After Fred leaves two men drop by and ask Scrooge to contribute some of his money to their charity. Scrooge refuses and gives the two men nothing. In the next scene Marley's ghost comes to Scrooge's home wearing chains. When Scrooge asks Marley why he has so many chains, Marley answers "I wear the chain I forged for life." He is saying that he made this chain himself. Each link represents a sin he had made. He warns Scrooge that his chain was Marley's length seven years ago and ever since it had kept on building bigger and bigger and got more tangled ans the years passed on. Marley also warns Scrooge that He is going to be visited by three different spirits on Christmas Eve - the ghost of Christmas past, the ghost of Christmas present and the ghost of Christmas future. In the last scene Scrooge gets visited by the ghost of Christmas past and they take a journey into Ebenezer Scrooge's past. Through the night they see Scrooge himself as a young boy, a man named Fezziwig, and his engagement to Belle, a woman who leaves Scrooge because he is so caught up in his money and business things that he doesn't show or feel any feeling towards her. However, Scrooge is invisible to those he watches.
