The independent clauses are the ones conveying a full meaning and/or preceded by a coordinate preposition, as opposed to the dependent ones.

Independent clauses:

 • "The seventh graders held a dance that night, and the eighth graders saw a play."
 • "Isaac Newton described the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration, and he made discoveries in optics and mathematics."
 • "Nikki has learned some computer coding, but she also wants to study graphic design."
 • "The Jayhawks are a favorite in today's game, so a trip to the playoffs could be in their future."

Dependent clauses:

 • "Even though they were exhausted from their long day."
 • "To name just a few of his contributions to science."
 • "Which is being taught at the community center this winter."
 • "After a huge victory last week."

What is an independent clause?

An independent clause contains a subject and a predicate, and it can be preceded by a coordinate conjunction. The coordinate conjunctions are:

 • For
 • And
 • Nor
 • But
 • Or
 • Yet
 • So

Independent clauses convey a complete meaning or a full thought on their own, which means they can be completely understood even if alone. Example:

 • I saw a movie last night. But I didn't like it.

What is a dependent clause?

Dependent clauses do not convey a complete meaning on their own. They follow subordinate conjunctions and need a main clause to complete their meaning. Examples of subordinate conjunctions are:

 • Even though
 • After
 • Because
 • While

With the information above in mind, we can conclude the answer given above is correct.

Discuss how the narrator's initial feelings about the blind man and his treatment of the blind man reveal problems in his relati
Lynna [10]

Answer and Explanation:

Even though your question does not mention the book or story which it concerns, we may assume it is about the short story "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver, since the three characters in the story are the narrator, his wife, and her blind friend.

The narrator's initial feelings toward the blind man, Robert, are permeated with prejudice. He sees himself as superior simply because he can "see". He thinks of Robert as an incomplete man, a man who cannot be happy nor make a woman happy. He treats Robert as if his presence were an nuisance, as if a blind man were the worst company one could have. He also thinks it is an absurd for Robert to have a full beard and not wear dark sunglasses, just like a normal non-blind person.

We can quickly tell the one who truly has an impairment is the narrator himself. He certainly can see with his eyes; he is not physically blind. But he cannot go beyond that. He does not truly "see". Robert knows the narrator's wife much better than the narrator does. Robert sees more, because he listens, because he learns, because he is willing to not judge. The narrator's relationship with other people and even himself is one of appearances, shallow and judgmental.
