Nixon's plan of Vietnamization was a continuation of the policy of containment. Even though this plan revolved around the gradual withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam, the US was still trying to stop the spread of communism. They were continuing this policy by training and equipping the Southern Vietnamese army with the resources needed to remain free from communist rule. Just because the US forces would not be there physically, it does not mean that the US gave up completely on their mission to stop the spread of communism in this part of the world.
