All the time, due to the author's use of word choice and imagery, while he leads us down the catacombs with the characters, we have this foreboding feeling. We know something bad and scary will happen. <u>However, for a brief moment at the beginning of the story, the mood is one of enjoyment, of fun. That is because Montresor goes out to meet with Fortunato during a Carnival celebration. The streets are filled with people drinking, dancing, and smiling. It is important to pay attention to Montresor, though, for his resolution does not waver for a second. Even amidst the celebration, even upon finding happy and ignorant Fortunato, Montresor does not let go of his desire for vengeance.</u>
