Explanation:

Atticus Finch is a heroic character for many different reasons. One in particular that stands out amongst the rest is that he defended a black man in court, proved his abilities and cared for everyone as equals. During a time of racism, he stood up and defended Tom Robinson. It required a lot of caring on Atticus Finch's side to defend Tom and the community knew he didn't stand much of a chance without Atticus's defence.
