Both, of them were deceived by Satan(The devil).As some say that, the devil appeared in the form of sense to them and whispered in there ears to pluck that one specific fruit and eat, while others say that, the devil appeared in the form of some thing else rather then just a sense or feeling.  

Consequences:

The one true creater ordered them leave the heavens, as they were found disobeying his will, which was not supposed to be like that, and then they came down to the Earth and they had kids, which grew in number generation after generations.
