A contractor is building a new subdivision on the outside of a city. He has started work on the first street and is planning for

the other streets to run in a direction parallel to the first. The second street will pass through (1, 5). Find the equation of the location of the second street in standard form.

The linear equation for the second street, in standard form, is:

x + y = 6.

<h3>What is a linear function?</h3>

A linear function is modeled by:

y = mx + b

In which:

  • m is the slope, which is the rate of change, that is, by how much y changes when x changes by 1.
  • b is the y-intercept, which is the value of y when x = 0, and can also be interpreted as the initial value of the function.

The second street is parallel to the first, that is, they have the same slope, hence:

m = (1 - 3)/(0 - (-2)) = -1.

Then:

y = -x + b.

It passes through (1,5), that is, when x = 1, y = 5, which is used to find b.

y = -x + b.

5 = -1 + b

b = 6.

The equation is:

y = -x + 6.

In standard form:

x + y = 6.
