While Andrew Jackson is correctly our 7th president, his presidency took place from 1829 - 1837. He is known to be one of the founders of the Democratic Party, though the party has strayed from his beliefs of following the Constitution to the letter and leaving more rights to the states instead of delegating the power to the federal government, which is found in beliefs in the current Republican Party.
