What is catastrophic eruption in Sumatra and in Mt. Pinatubo?

The most recent Toba eruption was a supervolcano eruption that took place at the location of the present-day Lake Toba in Sumatra, Indonesia, some 71,000 years ago.

Reason for Toba eruption is-

 • The greatest known volcanic explosion on Earth in the last two million years, the Toba volcano eruption, produced a steep-walled crater that eventually became the source of the ancient lake.
 • Supervolcanic eruptions are exceedingly unusual and massive eruptions like this one.

On June 15, 1991, Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines saw the second-biggest volcanic explosion of this century and by far the largest eruption to affect a highly populated area. The eruption caused massive mudflows, high-speed avalanches of hot ash and gas, and a hundreds-mile-wide cloud of volcanic ash.

Reason for Mount Pinatubo eruption is-

 • More than 32 km (20 mi) of magma beneath Mount Pinatubo was surging toward the surface, causing tiny volcano tectonic earthquakes and massive steam explosions that blew three holes in the volcano's north slope.
