Writers pay special attention to detail in their writing. Each author has their own unique voice. Read the following passage and

think about the picture Jacobs is painting. What do you find interesting about this particular passage? What is the tone of this passage (scary, dull, exciting, happy, sad)? Explain your thinking.
He sat until he was chilled with the cold, glancing occasionally at the figure of the old woman peering through the window. The candle-end, which had burned below the rim of the china candlestick, was throwing pulsating shadows on the ceiling and walls, until with a flicker larger than the rest, it expired. The old man, with an unspeakable sense of relief at the failure of the talisman, crept back to his bed, and a minute afterward the old woman came silently and apathetically beside him.

The tone of this passage can be described as:

 • Dull

The references to the flickering flame, the old woman, and slow movement of the old man who crept back into his bed connote dullness.

What is tone?

Tone is the general feeling that can be deduced from a text. In the passage above, we see the dull description of events.

The movements of the persons in the story, the apathy of the woman, and the candle light which was dying out all point to a dull tone.

Answer:

C. include minor details

Explanation:

Option C is the correct phrase that actually adds verbal irony to the paragraph.

Verbal irony is known to take place when the intention of the speaker is to speak the opposite of what he/she means. It is a figure of speech.

From the given paragraph, we discover that Jamile's summaries even included the comments made by every council member. So, instead of Dina to directly say that the summaries contain so much details and takes time to read, the use of verbal irony states the opposite; that it contains minor details.
