As sugar planters fled from the revolution in Haiti, some moved to Cuba's Oriente Province, others to North America—to Louisiana

. By the time the Haitian plantation owners and overseers reached New Orleans, abolitionists were pressing to end the African slave trade. The tragedy is that this movement to end slavery did nothing to improve conditions in Louisiana. In fact, the state that slaves called Lousy Anna was the very worst place for an African in America; it was the Caribbean all over again—a death sentence.
In every single American slave state, the population of enslaved people kept rising even after the slave trade was abolished. That was because enough enslaved children were born, lived, and grew to become adults. There was just one exception to this rule: Louisiana, where the native-born enslaved population kept dropping. Sugar was a killer.

Unlike the Caribbean, Louisiana has cold snaps. That put an additional pressure on the sugar harvest. Not only did the slaves need to harvest the cane in perfect rhythm with the grinding mills, but the entire crop had to be cut down between mid-October and December. This pace only increased when growers installed improved, steam-powered mills. People needed to work faster than the weather and to keep pace with machines.

According to the excerpt, it can be inferred that the sentence that supports the idea that sugar was more than just a killer in Louisiana is option 4. "people needed..."

<h3>What does the word Killer mean in the snippet?</h3>

According to the context described in the fragment, reference is made to the fact that sugar in Louisiana was affected by the weather, so the slaves were required to perform faster at the rate of the mills to prevent the crop from being damaged with the cold.

From the above, it can be inferred that this characteristic of the climate and the cultivation of sugar was a difficulty for the lives of the slaves who had to demand too much of themselves to work at full speed.

Note: This question is incomplete because the question and the options are missing. Here is the complete information:

Which line from the passage best provides evidence to support the claim that sugar was more of "a killer" in Louisiana than in the Caribbean?

  1. "In every single American slave state, the population of enslaved people kept rising. . . ."
  2. ". . . enough enslaved children were born, lived, and grew to become adults."
  3. "not only did the slave states need to harvest the cane in perfect rhythm with the grinding mills. . . ."
  4. "people needed to work faster than the weather. . . ."

Answer:

When man's wishes for power disappoint him, he learns that true happiness comes from within.

Explanation:

The story of "The Three Brass Pennies" is an ancient Chinese tale retold by Augusta Huiell Seaman. The story revolves around Ah Fo and a magician that he rescued who gave him three wishes.

Ah Fo is a student who wishes to get knowledge of everything. He encountered the Magician and rescued him from the evil magician. In gratitude for the rescue, the Magician gave him three brass pennies that will help bring his wishes to come true. But Ah Fo returned the three brass pennies upon the realization that one's happiness comes from one's own work, stating <em>"What most is to be content and to succeed through my own hard work"</em>.

Thus, the <u>central theme of the story is that man's wishes for power disappoint him and also that true happiness comes from within</u>.
