In a(n) observational study, a researcher carefully and systematically watches and records behavior, taking care to avoid affecting the subjects being studied.

A type of study that observes an individual or measures a specific result. No attempt is made to affect the outcome (for example, no treatment is given).

A very simple example is some kind of research. Suppose someone on a busy street in the neighborhood of New York asks a random passerby for the number of pets and uses that data to determine if more pet food stores should be added to the area.

It is called an observational study because investigators observe people without any manipulation or intervention. This is in contrast to randomized controlled trials in which researchers intervene to determine the impact on results.
