Mahatma Gandhi was raised by a Hindu merchant caste or in the modern times, numerous commercial enterprises. 

His family was traditional, which was even proven by performing early marriages. Gandhi and his brothers were married with young girls at an early age with the preference of his parents, specifically his Father. It was only at an older age when Gandhi realized how he despised the current system at that time.
