In the Color Purple, Mrs. Harpo's experience is such that he first falls in love with Sofia. Then thins fall out between the both of them and they go separate. See the compare and contrast below.

After Sofia left Harpo with her children, Harpo find a new girl. Her name is Squeak.

Things had fallen apart between Harpo and Sofia because Harpo is very conventional and does not like Sofia's independence.

When Nine-year-old Harpo and Mary Agnes' daughter passes away, Sofia is so struck by his affection for this little boy that she can't help but fall in love with him once more.
