The Battle for Guadalcanal is important because Allied forces finally began to take the offensive for the first time in the Pacific. This battle was held from August 7th, 1942 to February 9th, 1943.

Senator Calhoun's speech stated that southerners should have the right to take slaves, as their personal properties, anywhere. Although an abolitionist, Senator Daniel Webster was willing to comprise to keep the Union together, that was more important to him than free soil.
